We carry out energy audits in companies as a systematic way of scrutinising and analysing their use and consumption of energy. Companies which are not classed as small and medium-sized enterprises by definition (SMEs) are legally obliged to carry out energy audits.

Energy audits are mandatory for large companies every four years
Large companies are defined in EU recommendation 2003/361/EC as having more than 250 employees or an annual turnover of more than 50 million euro or a balance sheet total of more than 43 million euro. All large companies are obliged to have an energy audit carried out at least every four years under Article 8 paragraph 4 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU (EED).

Energy audit in accordance with EDL-G
Energy audits are required to conform to DIN EN 16247-1 and must be repeated every four years. The legal basis is the German Energy Services Act (Energiedienstleistungsgesetz - EDL-G). The Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle - BAFA) carries out random checks to verify whether companies have fulfilled their obligations.

Procedure involved in an energy audit
An energy audit for companies comprises several phases, starting with an initial meeting to prepare for the audit and to gather all the relevant data on the company and its production processes. This is followed by a site visit to inspect the premises and a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact in order to identify the measures required to increase energy efficiency. The process ends with a presentation of the results which includes a detailed energy report and a final discussion.
Alternatives to the energy audit
