GMP means "good manufacturing practice". It describes guidelines for assuring the quality of production processes and the production environment, including for the production of cosmetic products. It involves the practical development and implementation of quality assurance.
The requirement of producing cosmetic products according to cosmetic GMP has already been established in the cosmetic industry for many years. It ensures the constant quality, and therefore also the safety to health, of your products. The primary objective is the safety of cosmetic products that are sold to consumers.
EU Cosmetics Directive 1223/2009 demands the production of cosmetic products in line with good manufacturing practice – cosmetic GMP (Article 8). The DIN EN ISO 22716 standard (Guidelines on Good Manufacturing Practices) in the Official Journal of the European Union is to be regarded as a central guideline at both national and EU level in this context.
A declaration regarding adherence to good manufacturing practice must also be specified as part of the product information file (PID) which has to be created for each product brought into circulation (Article 11 of EU Cosmetics Directive 1223/2009).
Adherence to the principles of good manufacturing practice is thus legally binding for all cosmetic manufacturers (responsible person). All EU member states are required to monitor adherence to the principles of good manufacturing practice by the respective manufacturers or responsible persons (Article 22).
