Analysis of damage to products, materials and components

Whether metal or plastic – damage to materials often has far-reaching consequences for products and production processes which can be very costly for manufacturers. We are the company you need to call if you want to have a systematic damage analysis carried out (in accordance with VDI 3822).

WESSLING carries out various analyses in the laboratories, including tests on damage on plastic parts and metallic components.

We will help you to appraise the situation, identify the cause of the damage and find solutions to remedy it. Damaged material reduces the value of a product or can even render it unusable. Damage to materials can also cause cost-intensive production downtimes. This makes it all the more important to avoid defects and analyse their causes. If damage occurs, rapid analysis and rectification must be carried out in order to limit economic losses and consequential damage.

WESSLING expertise in material damage: analysis, damage hypotheses and adjustment tests

We work as a team, drawing in experts from different disciplines and combining consultancy and instrumental analysis. We look at the theoretical issues with you and draw up a damage hypothesis on site or on the basis of the products, materials or components. The symptoms of damage might include pitting corrosion in metal, paint damage or the breakage of plastic components.

Tests on metals, plastics, ceramics and biological material

We carry out instrumental analysis in our laboratories in order to identify the nature of the damage and we use adjustment tests to diagnose the cause of the damage. We examine metals, plastics, ceramics and biological material. The cause of damage needs to be identified on the basis of the results of our investigations in order to allow rapid remedial action to be taken.

Advantages of damage analysis

Systematic investigations are the means by which measures can be defined with a view to remedying the damage and also preventing it. As far as our customers are concerned, damage analyses in accordance with the VDI 3822 series of guidelines mean that the selection of materials is optimised, thereby improving quality assurance.

A look inside the laboratory: damage analysis at WESSLING

01 Description of the damage and assessment of the situation

If you instruct us to carry out an damage analysis (in accordance with VDI 3822), we begin with a description of the damage. The first aspect required for this is background information by way of descriptions, documents or photographs. This is followed by an assessment of the condition of the damaged products, materials or components which have been made available to us. Alternatively, an on-site inspection can be carried out. The damage is fully documented on the basis of all this information.

02 Damage hypothesis and test plan

The detailed description of the damage allows various theories as to the cause of the damage. For this purpose, a probable, hypothetical cause of damage is established from the description of the damage and the available data, and this theory is then to be substantiated by the subsequent investigations. We therefore draw up a test plan covering all the materials used and possibly damaged and the relevant investigations.

03 Analysis

The appropriate method of analysis is selected on the basis of the samples and the material as well as the damage hypothesis. Our laboratories offer a wide variety of testing methods and assessment procedures for this purpose. We use instrumental analysis methods or carry out adjustment tests.

04 Deduction of the cause of damage

The outcomes ensuing from the description of the damage, the assessment of the condition and the instrumental analyses are combined to determine the cause of the damage. The result of the damage analysis should provide sufficiently reliable indications of a possible cause of damage. In this way, the damage hypothesis is confirmed and the cause of the damage is clearly identified. We document these results, broken down into primary and secondary influencing factors, and issue recommendations for remedial action.
